Ah and Sun? Only in Washington!

Oh how I love sailing. Not just sailing really but all boating. Put me out there in an inner tube and I'd be happy as a clown. But today Dene and I got to go on David's 37 foot C&C. David is an old co-worker of Dene's who has stayed in touch with her through Linked in and Facebook and every now and then he sends out an email to folks on an email list that he needs crew for his boat. Since he knows how much we want a boat, we are on that list and we got to go today.

Today's adventure was just tooling around the Puget Sound and practicing putting out the spinnaker. I was really excited when I heard David say this because I've never been on a sail boat when the spinnaker was out so I was in for a learning experience. David loves to race his boat and C&C's are great boats to race with so with a spinnaker I could only imagine we'd be reaching some hi knotical speeds.

For this trip Dene manned the helm and I was on the main sail lines. The traveler on Davids boat is situated just in front of the huge wheel so Dene and I stayed in the cock pit while the one of the more experience crew members showed his friend how to rig up the sails and the third less experienced guy stayed in the cock pit with us.

So we started out of Shilshole heading south with the main sail and the head sail out. We sailed for roughly an hour in this direction and then turned around so that we were heading north. We practiced tacking a bit more while Jamison, the most experience crew member got the spinnaker ready to deploy. David explained everyone's roll in getting the spinnaker out and then took the helm from Dene. On David's mark the spinnaker sail was released and we all played our roll. It was not just exciting but really scary to see how much power this sail can have on the vessel. As it went up and took flight I noticed the spinnaker was caught on something on the bow and wasn't releasing as expected. Jamison got it released and the sail soared up. As it did Dene's line started to soar out of her hands. Thank God she had gloves on or she would have had rope burn. I grabbed the line along side her when I noticed this and she was able to get it under control. Shortly after the sail started working. Wow was all I could think of was that sailing really is sheer terror at 5 miles per hour. This was really exciting.

Unfortunately when the sail was being released and got caught on the bow it tore a bit. Due to this David didn't leave it out and the three guys heaved it back on board. Even though it was short lived it was very exciting and I'm looking forward to another experience on board David's boat. One of the great things about David is that when he invites you to crew for him, he teaches you how to sail. He doesn't do this for more experienced people but for us greenhorns he did and I really appreciate it. For this I can't thank him enough for such a fantastic experience.

And now I'm dreaming about boats again and can't wait till I can have one. Even if its just a little tiny cutie cabin, I don't care. I just want to be out on that water again.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gitarwmn.blogspot.com/2010/04/sailing-in-rain-ah-and-sun-only-in.html' title='Sailing in the Rain. Place the potatoes on a large piece of heavy duty tin foil. Next chop up your carrots and other vegetables and place them on top of the potatoes. Now add chunks of the hamburger on top of the. By adding the hamburger on top, the grease from the meat will trickle down to the potatoes, flavoring and cooking them. Spice with a little salt, pepper and garlic. Now on the very top place your biscuit or bis or mix. Don't use too many ingredients so that you can't seal up the foil. These are intended to be single meals so you can prep several of them depending on how many people you are feeding. Seal up the foil and double wrap it. Place in the coals or on the fire for about 15 minutes turning it around often so it doesn't burn.

Let cool a few minutes before eating. I like to put BBQ sauce on mine but you can put any spices or sauces you like at this point. Enjoy.

Camping, hooray for the camper!

Its March in the northwest and even though its been a mild winter its still pretty cold outside. I scheduled this camping trip knowing these things because I wanted to try out my pop up camper in cold weather to see how comfortable it would be. Its an older pop up, 1988 to be exact, but it still works and my intent was to go to a campground where I could plug it in so that I could use a space heater to keep warm.

So Dene and I took a couple of days off and headed up to Deception Pass this past weekend. Since we were both in need of a long weekend away this seemed like the trip to do it. We arrived at the site Thursday around 4pm and had the camper setup in no time flat. Since the sleeping cushions were moldy, I tossed them out and we took the memory foam mattress off our bed and put it in the trailer. We decided to put up tarps around the camper to keep the canvas dry since rain was in the forecast. This way when we were ready to pack it back up it would be just a little bit dryer.

We soon had a fire built, a beer cracked and dinner cooking on the fire. Ah we were camping again and even though it was cold, we were happy. After a couple of hours we began to feel it start to sprinkle and decided it was time to go inside the camper and play some games. Dene had never played real poker with chips and cards so I taught her how the betting was done. She knew the basics of the game but the betting part was what she wanted to learn. As the rain picked up we continued to have a great time inside the camper playing games. This made Dene start to really appreciate the benefits of having a camper and being able to go camping in cold weather, stay dry and warm and still have a great time.

The next day we were talking about how great it was to be able to go camping in colder weather. Then I made a really good breakfast and Dene suggested I write a book about campfire cooking and tell some of my many camp stories in the book. So I'm going to do it and self publish it on Amazon as well as sell it on this blog. I doubt I'll make a million bucks on it but I thought it sounded like a really fun project. So I'm adding writing a book to my list of adventures as this book is not only a recollection of previous adventures but future volumes of new camping adventures to come. Stay tuned for more on this.

Happy camping all!

First Camping Trip is near

Well its been a mild winter in the Northwest and now that I have my pop up camper back from my ex I've been thinking a late winter/early spring trip might be in order. So I took the camper to a friends house (thanks Butch) and got it cleaned up and then took it to the RV repair place and got some new tires, new vent lid and a few miner items fixed on it. So today we are going to go through the storage unit and getting the camping gear out and pack it up in the camper. Once this is done we'll be set to go camping just about any time we want. Just a quick trip to the store and pack a few items I won't store in it and we can be off at a whim. I'm stoked about it.

Colder weather camping is the only time I really want to be in a camp ground because no one else will be there. And with a small pop up I can plug it into the RV space and run a small space heater so we can stay warm and cozy even if its raining and cold outside. With that in mind we are going to one of the most popular camp grounds in the state and have one of the best sites in the place. I'll post more details about when and where we are going after the fact because I don't like to post these things on the internet.

Stay tuned for more, now that winter is over I think I'll be posting more often on this blog. And I can't wait to go fishing.

Smoked Salmon Puttanesca

Adventure #31

I've been thinking about developing this recipe all week. I was at the new QFC in West Seattle a couple days ago and happened by the seafood counter where they were selling Salmon Locs. I love Salmon and I love Salmon Locs especially. I bought them and thought that I could just have cheese and crackers during the Seahawk's game and the locs would go well with this. That never did happen so when Monday rolled around and I looked in the fridge I wondered what I should do with them. Then I thought, I've got Salmon Locs, Capers and home made Pesto sauce, there's got to be something I can do with this? Well there was.

There were a couple of things I wanted which I thought would be good in this dish. Penne pasta and Puttanesca sauce in a jar. Why sauce in a jar, 1. because I didn't have time for a home made sauce and I don't know how to do it from scratch, yet. 2. It came to me when I was at the store looking at sauces that Puttanesca was the way to go for what I had in my brain.

The Penne pasta was a preference because I'm sick of spaghetti and linguine pastas.

So anyway here is the recipe, I'm blogging it so I don't forget it and can make this again. Very yummy and pretty healthy for the most part.

Ingredients:

16 ounces of Penne Pasta

Buy or make Puttanesca sauce, I used a 16 ounce jar of store bought.

Sliced black olives

Grated cheese of your choice

Buy or make a Pesto sauce

Capers

Salmon Locs

Process:

Boil the pasta. The box I bought said to boil for 11 minutes. For the last few minutes of the boil add a teaspoon or so of the Pesto sauce and stirred it in before I drained the water.

Heat up your sauce. I added a few extra capers to the sauce because I love them.

Gather up your olives and cheese and have them ready for serving.

Strain the pasta, when done and add back to the pan.

Add the Puttanesco sauce right way, stire a couple times and add the Salmon Locs.

Stir until gently mixed, not too long as you want the dish hot enough to melt your cheese.

Plate your dish in a wide bowl and top with cheese first then olives. You may add a garnish of fresh parslet if desired.

Server directly.

Adventure #9 - Clamming on the coast

Dene and I went clamming this Saturday at Kalaloch beach on the Washington State coast. The Washington state department of fish and wildlife opened up a couple of beaches this weekend for Razor clamming and Kalaloch was one of them. We went to Kalaloch last year and loved the place so we chose this beach to go Razor clamming. Dene gets the supplemental reports from the Department of Fish and Game and their report also made it sound like there were really good populations at Kalaloch so that also made the decision easy.

We made reservations at Kalaloch lodge since and loved it there. Its an expensive place though so we decided to only stay one night and since the clamming didn't start till afternoon we figured it would be plenty of time to get up and get there from Seattle. This worked out great because low tide was at 6:30 and good clamming wouldn't start till about 3 or 4 PM while the tide was going out. We even had time to scope out a couple of different beaches and decided the one just north of the campground would be ideal.

At first we started hiking away from all the other clammers but then decided the other people out there were not a bad thing as they actually knew what they were doing while we were newbies who were expecting a spout of water coming out of the sand. When this wasn't happening we were wondering how the heck are these people finding these clams? I saw a bunch of people taking their shovels and tapping the ground. I was wondering what the hell does that do? I finally asked someone what this did and she said that the clams would spit up if they were they. So I started mimicking this behavior to see if I could see something different in the sand. I saw nothing. No spitting clams and I couldn't see where they were and Dene was just as frustrated. When I was a kid and went clamming with my parents, I remember the clams spitting up out of the sand. These razor clams were a bit different.

So I finally asked someone who had just dug up a clam, what are you looking for. He told me there is a small indentation in the sand about the size of a dime. Look for that. Then a kid told me here look there are three of them right here and then I saw what they were all looking for and it all became clear. I relayed that information to Dene and we started looking for these indentations. It took awhile but we finally figured out what to look for and started bringing up clams.

As we were growing more and more tired we happend upon this family who was doing quite well and started digging near them. They didn't seem to mind and in fact said there were more clams there than they could ever dig up and they were right. We found most of our clams in this spot and then after we had dug up about 7 or 8 a peice decided we were completely exhausted and were ready to quit. Thanks to all those people who were nice to us and helped us out. Now we have a much better idea about what we are doing and are talking about going for Gooey Duck next.

That night in spite of our exhaustion I cleaned the razor clams and was pleasantly surprised to see how much meat we got from them. The limit was 15 a peice and we got about half that. If we had gotten our limit we would have had enough for several meals for sure. Once cleaned I put them in the little refrigerator we had. We iced them up for the way home and then put them in the freezer right away when we arrived.

Should be an excellent chowder and we looking forward to it.

The List

Dene and I were talking recently about our list and we decided it was time to start a list. We just heard that Washington state is going to open up razor clamming in the middle of October. We've been talking about doing this for months and even bought a razor clamming tube for the adventure several months ago in anticipation. Well, once we heard this I got online and booked a reservation for a place to stay on the coast. I'm excited now and can't wait to go. Aside from the clamming I love going to the coast this time of year in anticipation of the possibility of a fall storm brewing off the coast. May not see much clamming if its storming but I don't care.

More to come on this with photo's.

Camping in the rain, again!

So every camping trip this summer has been rained on. Our trip this past weekend to Box Canyon was no different. Since it was the last camping trip of the season I wasn't about to cancel but thanks to experience camping in the northwest it was certainly not miserable. Unlike when I was younger and couldn't afford rain gear now I come very much prepared. I had my gortex pants and jacket. Gortex hiking shoes and 4 tarps for the camp site. We had them all setup and had a great time. I made my infamous River Chicken (basically roasted chicken over the camp fire), we drank a lot of beer and laughed our asses off. Rain or no rain we had a great time and I can't wait for camping next year.

Some day I hope to have an RV or maybe get my tent trailer from my ex so I can camp well into the fall and spring. Till then I'll camp in a crappy tent with tarps and rain gear. Regardless I'll have fun!

We caught another boat but we had to let it go.

So Dene and I had an adventurous morning today. We were gong to go hiking today but everyone canceled. You can read Dene's description of the day on our other blog about boating at http://sweetsurrendertheboat.blogspot.com/2009/08/renting-skiff-on-elliott-bay.html. The part that got me is when we were fishing in the skiff and another boat came soaring too close to our stern and ran over Dene's line. I really couldn't believe the stupidity of the guy and I couldn't believe it when I saw Dene's line screaming out of the reel. I've been fishing and boating for many years and have never seen anyone do something like this so when Dene was panicing and telling me to find a knife it took a minute to sink in. We got the knife and got the line off the reel before it pulled the brand knew salmon rod overboard but it was one of those "wow that was really stupid" moments. At least that guy gets to unwind all that line I loaded on that reel now. And he gets to take apart his prop to do so. What spurred this on was a magazine I found call Kayak Angler and the fact that we now live on a beach. The other thing is that a kayak would be cheaper and easier than any other boat right now because of the fact that we are living in an apartment. And after fishing on a couple of local piers this week with everybody and their brother, the privacy and quietness of a Kayak sounds great. Now what do you do? Well now is the time to clean and cook your crab. Hopefully you were able to keep your crab alive till you got it home. If that is the case then you have to deal with how to kill them. There is a lot of controversy about boiling crab alive as many people consider this cruel. The other method is to knock them out before you boil them. The other thing you can do is stick them in the freezer. It is said that putting the crab in the freezer before you boil them makes them dormant and they are also easier to handle at that point. To knock the crab out just take a large chef knife and give them a good bonk on the back of their shell. Which ever method you choose is up to you. Also some people like to cook the crab and then clean them others clean them and then cook them. Again this is your choice as it really doesn't matter which comes first.

Here are some items you will need.

A good chopping knife

A large stock pot to cook the crab

Sink and faucet.

Here are the steps to cleaning the crab.

Pull of the back shell of the crab. This isn't that hard really just grab the side of the crab at the base and hold down the rest of the body as you pull the shell up. Its should lift right off.

On the back side of the crab pull off the triangle flap on its belly.

Now turn the crab over again and clean out the gills and any intestine. The intestine runs down the middle of the back. Some people also like to clean away the yellow mushy stuff in the crab. Others find this a delicacy and you can find recipes for them if you chose to keep it.

Now break or cut the crab in half and chop off the head.

Chop off the legs and rinse the crab once again.

Now its ready for eating. You can grab a mallet and some pliers or kitchen scissors and dig right in to the crab. If you would like to eat the crab legs as is then its often best served with a little garlic butter and lemon but you can implement your favorite crab recipe from here. Knowing the rules around what you are fishing for can save you a lot of head ache and possibly a large fine.

Now prepare your crab bait. I like to use chicken for bait as it seems to catch a lot of crab. In fact the older and stinkier the chicken the better. I'll often get the chicken out a day or two ahead of my trip to let it sit out and get a little rancid. If you have a crab bait holder you might want to put it in as you are taking out the chicken so you don't have to handle it as much once it goes bad. Another good bait to use is claims as this is what the crab naturally feed on. Which ever crab bait I use I like to put it in the bait holder and toss it into a plastic bag to reduce handling.

When you are ready to start crabbing, tie your rope to the crab pot, making sure you have enough rope for the depth you are going.

Then tie the bait to the net.

If you are fishing from a boat you will also need a buoy to tie the net to if you plan on leaving it for a while to pursue other activities. Check your regulations around the rules for this. If you are fishing from a dock you can just tie the rope to the dock or you can leave the net tied to your boat if you plan to stay with the net.

Let the crab pot soak for a while. It is important to let the net or pot soak for at least an hour before you check it. Moving it around too much may scare off the crab.

When you are ready to check it just pull up the net. If you have crab be sure to measure them as in most areas you can only keep crab that are a certain size. Refer to your fishing regulations for the specific size in your area. If you have any keepers then toss them in a bucket or cooler and try to keep them alive as long as you can. The fresher the meat the better.

Drop the net again and repeat the soak for more crab fishing.

Its best to cook your catch right away while they are fresh. The best method to cook them is to boil them in water for 15 to 25 minutes. Some people are squeamish about boiling the crab live and it has been said to be a cruel death. If you choose to kill them before the boil then be sure to kill them at the last minute to retain freshness. Once the crab is cooked you can implement a number of tasty crab recipes such as crab cakes or good ole crab legs with butter. That is subject for another day though as crab meat is so yummy.

What a great weekend!

It started out on Saturday morning when I woke up. It was SeaFair weekend in Seattle and the Angels did a show on Saturday as well as Sunday. I knew better than to try to drive down there so I hopped on my bike and started to ride down.

It was cool this morning unlike earlier in the week when temperatures in Seattle hit 100 or more. But this morning had a fog on the Puget Sound and it was refreshing. As I rode around the Duwamish head I could see the tops of the buildings downtown sticking up above the fog in Eliot Bay. Very cool site for a summer day. Here is the Picture I got from the beach of the fog using my Canon PowerShot Camera.

After enjoying this view for a bit I rode on towards Harbor Island and crossed the bridge into south downtown. This isn't a bad ride because its either trail or bike lane so I really enjoyed it. I then broke off around the stadium and got onto Dearborn and up over the hill to Lake Washington.

The crowd was already huge when I arrived so I hiked up the hill to try and find a good viewing area. I found a spot in the bushes where I could see the bridge and a bit of the log boom so I locked up the bike and headed to the bushes.

This worked out really well except for the know it all asshole who kept telling the crowd around him what each jet was and what maneuver each pilot was in the middle of. Aside from this annoyance the show was great.

As you can see from the video the Blue Angels are amazing. Its even more powerful in person because of the boom the jets cause as they fly by. It moves your whole body and you realize the power of the jets and the amazing talent the pilots have to fly them. Until next SeaFair.

Hiking on hold today

Dene woke up today after working a long day yesterday not wanting to go hiking. So instead of hiking today I went for another bike ride. This ride was about 18 miles and I decided to try out the Duwamish river trail as it follows the river through the industrial area of Seattle.

Never again. It was scary and dirty and the trail never really followed the river except for a tiny little patch of a park that had tent city growing in it. The only view of the river was industrial and it stunk.

So never again. I think next time I'll go up through Lincoln park, then up California Avenue and then back down through Alki Beach.

Great Biking in Seattle

8AM Saturday morning and I woke up feeling the need to go Bike riding today. Since I had a few errands to run downtown I decided I would ride downtown and do them. This was probably the smartest thing I could have done as there was a baseball game a soccer game and Sea Fair Parade and run was set to happen today as well. What a great ride! I started from my apartment on Alki Beach and rode around the beach to Harbor Island.

My first stop downtown was to Safeco field to exchange some tickets since my friend had gotten sick at the last minute and couldn't make it. At first when I told the ticket guy this he started telling me they don't usually do same day exchanges but if its a medical issue then they might make an exception. I explained to him that my friend had kidney stones (no lie) and that he was pretty sick. He asked if my friend was in the hospital and I said yes (little white lie, he won't be there till Monday) and he then exchanged the tickets. I was really happy because I haven't hung out with this friend in some time and we used to have a blast at Mariner games so I really wanted to go.

My next stop was to Pike Place Market where there were a couple of kitchen supply stores. I don't usually like going to Pike Place on a summer Saturday cause its so damn crowded but this was an exception. My partner needed an apron for a catering gig and asked me to pick one up today. So I rode a little further and the second store I went to at the market had what I was looking for. Now since I was so close to Ferro's meat market right there I decided to stop and pick up some dinner. I ended up with a couple of thick lamb chops that I thought would be great on a BBQ.

Now I thought I might ride down to the water front and take the West Seattle Water Taxi across Eliot Bay instead of riding the whole way back. When I got to where the taxi boards it was way too crowded so I kept riding and came home. When I got back to my beach the Alki Art Fair was going on so I walked through it. I didn't see anything all that interesting so I hopped back on the back and rode the last half mile home.

What a great bike ride. About 17 miles total round trip which is more than I usually do. When I ride to work its only 8 miles. Then I sit on my ass at the office for at least 8 hours and hop back on and ride home so I get a big break in between. I gotta do more rides like this one if I want to prep for next years Seattle to Portland Bike ride. I'm still not sure if I'm going do that ride or the Seattle to Vancouver ride but we'll see.

Going hiking tomorrow so more to come.

Boat thing is on the hold

So the boat thing is on hold. The boats I've bid on have not worked out for various reasons and I'm working on taking care of some baggage before I try to buy a boat again. The dream to own and possibly live on a boat is very much alive still but until my baggage is taken care of I don't feel its smart to move forward with this.

Instead of living on a boat I've moved to the beach on Alki Beach in Seattle. My apartment is across the street from the beach and I can walk down to the water any time and enjoy the salt air every day. Now I get to ride my bike to work every day and experience living in the city again. Dene and I have also gotten a lot more active by living hear and have been hiking again. Soon I hope to sign us up for scuba lessons as well. I can't wait for that.

Stressed about the financials

Still waiting to hear from the bank.

I Bought a Boat!

Well, Almost. I made an offer on a boat this week and it was finally accepted. I am really excited as I'm finally going to live my dream of living on a boat and sailing and fishing when ever I want. I can't wait.

I'm also really excited about the idea of one day trying to sail some place other than the Puget Sound. I think it would be cool to sail down the west coast to Baha or San Fransisco or even Hawaii. We'll see though as I have a lot to learn about a sail boat. You see, I've been on boats but they were power boats, this is my first sail boat. I took a couple of classes on sailing and know I can pick it up with some more experience. I also love to learn and am looking forward to learning something new about one of my favorite subjects, boats.

I'll try to update this as I go. My partner Dene is joining me on this journey and is just as excited as I am about the adventure ahead of us.

Welcome to my blog

This blog is just about my life and hopefully new adventures to come with buying a boat and living on it.
